Communication tools refer to three forms of electronic communication in distance education courses—e-mail, discussion groups, and chat rooms. 
These tools enable the interaction between members of the teamwork involved in the different stages of integrated products, processes or manufacturing systems development. The tools that allow learners to learn and interact with each other, and the instructor(s).

Types of communication tools

1. Video conferencing

Video conferencing services have developed to become one of the top types of online communication tools. Businesses benefit from video conferencing through meetings. This is because meetings allow for the discussion of business progress and the collaboration of ideas.  Basically, there are two types of communications that are;

 1. Synchronous

 2. Asynchronous

 Synchronous

 It is also called real time, in which users must be simultaneously connected, rather like a telephone call.
1. Enabler real-time communication

 2. Used for instructional activities that require a higher degree of interaction

 3. Helps to solve urgent problems or issues

Examples; chat, telephone call, video conferencing


 Disadvantages of Synchronous

1. Slow connection distracts and fails to keep abreast of interest

 2. Difficult to make quick comments by slow computer users

 3. Discussion lose focus because of many side discussions

 4. Multiple threads of discussion are difficult to follow

 Advantages of Synchronous 

 1. Provide real-time communication

 2. Helps to solve urgent problems

 Asynchronous

 It’s doesn’t require people to access the internet at the same time.

Example; e-mail, electronic bulletin boards, we chat.


Disadvantages of Asynchronous 

 1. Discussion boards/blogs/vle posts fail to maintain the interest (minimizes frequency)

 2. Discourage learner’s participation

 Advantages of Asynchronous

 Not require people at the same time
